Simple Whole Wheat French Toast

Whisk a splash of milk and a drop of egg for your French toast and your efficient laziness.

The most basic kind of western breakfast is no doubt a combo of bread & butter, egg, and milk. I pondered on the makings of French toast, and realised it’s all about efficient laziness. Soak the sponge of bread into all the classics, absorb all that you love, fry it, and you are ready for the day.

I love everything dipping into milk, but never really dug into the reason behind. Now I get to think about it, I guess it is a splash of magic that makes everything pure, or that we were all babies once. Deep in our mind lives an infant that worries nothing but nourishment.

French toast has gone from a long journey, and I had run into it quite a few times. The one time I remember the most is when it had a glittering coat of caramel, crispy in One Fifteen Café. It was a small place packed with people who enjoy staying in a room teemed with sunlight. The French toast was served with vanilla ice-cream, which elevates the scent of milky flavour that satisfies everything I crave in the afternoon.

I miss the conversation I had with my friend Ariel, especially when we talked with our mouths stuffed with a mixture of milk and egg. I went around the bread section in the Whole Foods Market in search of the perfect dipping sponge. I’ve heard that challah is a perfect match, but was disappointed by the only challah I could find here, made of refined white flour. Not to mention that I have a pet peeve on refined wheat, because I celebrate the little imperfections that make things unique: the special taste of wheat and the little stubbornness in me (they grew from Chef Dan Barber’s amazing talk on The Taste of Wheat). So I dragged myself to the whole wheat section, and chose the simplest 100% whole-wheat bread.

Try this healthy recipe for your instant cravings! Less sugar, light, and delicious. 🙂
And don’t forget to keep up with my blog while I test to make my own whole wheat challah!

INGREDIENTS

  • 4 slices of 100% whole wheat bread
  • 2 organic large eggs
  • 250g organic whole milk
  • 1 tbsp butter

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Whisk the eggs gently, add in milk, and mix them well.
  2. Dip bread one slice at a time into egg mixture until it fully absorbs the liquid
(not like how my brain works as a dysfunctional sponge that never fully soaks up knowledge).
  3. Melt butter in a nonstick skillet with medium heat.
  4. Fry each slice of bread on medium heat until they’re golden brown on both sides.
  5. Glaze the French toasts with honey and serve them with seasonal fruits that you love.

    1. Thank you so so much! My mom saw your comment and she almost cried haha (so did I!)
I enjoy writing about food, and would definitely want to make a career out of it, but knowing that it’s so competitive just sometimes makes me lose confidence.
Thanks for your encouragement, and your friend’s blog really inspires me a lot!

I use Canon T5i for my pictures and VSCO to edit 🙂

      1. Wow that is really great to hear Mei-Chun. I am happy communication had a positive impact you and your mom. I would invite you to focus more on the competition with yourself – being the best you can be. With focus on something that we can’t control like what others are doing will inevitably lead to discouragement.

        Discouragement devours Dreams.

By just staying in your lane and giving your best, improving on the day before, you will make the most progress and find the most fulfillment. It is the internal competition with ourselves and our potential that empowers us.

    2. Thanks again for all your encouragements and suggestions!
Honestly, I’m not the right person to answer anything about camera because I really have no experience in professional photography. But I’m using a standard zoom lens (which is for amateurs), 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 canon 🙂
